Chilled and cold water pipe insulation

PAROC® insulation for chilled water pipework

PAROC® insulation for chilled and cold-water pipework

Cold water pipe insulation (lagging) is crucial for the performance of cold water systems (CWS) and chilled water systems (CHWS), as well as cooling systems. Systems which are designed and built to optimise operation and minimise unnecessary heat gain/loss and condensation all year round.

Additionally, in accordance with EU Directive 2020/2184 and BS 8580-1 cold-water systems should be insulated to prevent temperature changes that might contribute to bacterial growth, such as Legionella.

That is why PAROC® Stonewool pipe insulation is manufactured to keep pipework at the required or designed operating temperature and condition. Keeping systems and users happy. Our Stonewool pipe insulation is suitable for cold domestic water pipes, chilled water systems and cold tap water pipework. And it can be used for all building circuits (primary circuit, secondary circuit, etc.) and open or closed systems.

insulation for cold water systems

Cold water systems temperatures should be kept below 20°C to prevent legionella bacteria in order to meet health regulations because Legionella bacteria thrive in temperatures between 20°C and 40°C. PAROC® insulation will help maintain the temperature of pipework to ensure efficient and healthy operation in cold tap water and cold water systems.

PAROC® insulation will also help reduce condensation risk in warm or humid settings and when cold pipes are located alongside heating pipes. This will also limit the secondary effects of damaging pipework, walls, ceilings, or floors.

insulation for chilled water systems

Large-scale domestic, commercial, HVAC cooling and chilled water systems demand thermal protection for efficient and safe operation. PAROC® insulation for chilled water pipework can help keep temperatures between 6-12°C and limit heat transfer from nearby pipework. All cold-water pipework benefits from insulation, whether used in the plant room for different systems, distribution or with apparatus like HIUs and storage vessels.

High-performance pipe insulation

PAROC® Stonewool pipe insulation is suitable for heating pipes and cold pipes which contain water, glycol or other liquids. PAROC® insulation solutions for chilled water pipework help maintain a comfortable user environment. Our high-quality insulation can also contribute to energy savings and lower operating costs.

We have high-performance insulation pipe solutions for a range of applications, including heating, cooling tap water pipes, valves and joints.

Cold water pipe insulation benefits

PAROC® cold water pipe insulation solutions help maintain a comfortable user environment. Our insulation can also contribute to energy savings and lower operating costs.

Cold water pipe lagging can prevent thermal transfer and condensation on cold-water or chilled-water pipework. Over time, condensation buildup can damage pipework and reduce the system’s performance. This can then spoil and discolour floors, walls and ceilings, potentiality leading to mould growth and health problems.

Benefit from Chilled Water Pipe insulation

Prevent condensation, icon

Prevent condensation

Chilled water pipework is at risk of condensation in warm settings. To prevent condensation from forming, cold water pipes need to be insulated to keep the surface temperature of the insulation higher than the dew point of the surrounding air.

To minimise the risk of moisture ingress, PAROC® products have a water vapor-resistant barrier, a facing called AluCoat, which is a reinforced aluminium foil. Precise joint seals can be produced using appropriate tape and following installation guidelines, without additional gluing.

Reduce thermal gain

insulation for cold water pipes can help to reduce thermal gain and ensure maximum system efficiency. PAROC® cold water pipe insulation products have low thermal conductivity* and high thermal resistance. This helps to limit heat gain and temperature changes, which can lead to more efficient energy use and reduced operating costs.

Lower fire hazards

When tested to EN 13501-1, PAROC® products offer the highest fire class: either Euroclass A1 or A2-s1,d0. Our stone wool insulation products are non-combustible. They do not burn or contribute to fire spread. They will not produce any smoke or a very limited amount of smoke, and they do not produce flaming droplets. The melting temperature of stone wool products is over 1000°C*. The fire performance of stone wool does not deteriorate at high temperatures or over time. The surface temperature of faced products must not exceed 80°C.

Minimise health risks

Insulated pipes can prevent unintentional temperature changes that might contribute to bacterial growth, such as Legionella. Therefore, it is important to insulate cold water pipes to maintain temperatures below 20°C as per EU Directive 2020/2184.

Shorten installation

With a longer length of 1.2m, PAROC® HVAC Sections help to reduce the number of joints and potential thermal bridges, to speed up installation compared with the 1m lengths. PAROC® HVAC Sections have self-adhesive overlaps to make installation easy. And a range of suitable tapes and accessories are available to aid fitting.
