Paroc chooses fossil-free diesel and sustainable transportation to reduce emissions in Scandinavia

Written By ParocDate Published 2025-08-07

Paroc switched to fossil-free diesel (HVO) for all transports of products from its Swedish factories to Norwegian customers on 1 April 2023. For the Swedish market, Paroc collaborates with logistics companies that are investing in combined transportation by train and rapeseed oil-powered trucks. The initiative is part of Paroc's sustainability work and one of the cornerstones towards achieving the company's long-term goal – to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The green shift is made possible, among other things, through Paroc's collaboration with XR Logistik, who handle deliveries to the Norwegian market.

"The transition to fossil-free diesel for the Norwegian market is a step forward in our sustainability work in logistics in Scandinavia and brings us closer to our goals. In the Scandinavian market, we are aware that our customers are very committed to reducing carbon emissions from both manufacturing and transportation, especially in comparison to customers in Central and Southern Europe. We hope that our work in Scandinavia will be a starting point for reducing transportation emissions throughout Europe," says Hanna Siby, Logistics Manager for Paroc in Scandinavia.

"It feels great for us at XR Logistik to be able to be involved in realizing the ambitious CO2 goal that Paroc has set up. Our long-standing collaboration is further strengthened when we, together, choose fossil-free fuel for all deliveries to Norway," says Carl-Johan Gustavsson, Head of Traffic International at XR Logistik.

Large share of freight by train

For the Swedish market, Paroc is working with the logistics company Sandahls, in combination with other truck transporters whose trucks run on rapeseed oil. From the factory in Hässleholm, part of what is not transported by truck instead goes by train to Norrland. Transportation to and from Hällekis runs on liquid biogas, a collaboration that started in April 2023.

Transportation by train is a way of replacing trucks on the road, which immediately brings great environmental benefits.

"At Sandahls, we have an established plan to be fossil-free by 2026," says Christian Mattsson, who works as a salesman for Sandahls Logistik.

"The plan is implemented by investing in vehicles that run on fossil-free fuels and our own electric locomotives. In dialogue with Paroc, we have developed a production design that suits them, according to their needs. Since we have the intermodal traffic under our own management, we can, thus, ensure the quality of production via road and rail," Christian continues.

"The solution that we have built together with Paroc is a good investment towards carrying out fossil-free transports," concludes Mattsson.

Paroc is also working to optimize the packaging of products to maximize transportation capacity and, thereby, reduce transportation costs. An important part of the company's logistics work is to pack the material as efficiently as possible to make optimal use of the space on the pallets.

Fewer yet larger orders

Hanna Siby emphasizes the importance of efficiency in transport as a key factor in reducing emissions:

"A more efficient use of the transportation fleet is achieved by customers placing orders that fill the trucks or by placing fewer yet larger orders. This results in fewer transports and, thus, fewer miles driven per truck, which leads to reduced emissions regardless of the fuel used," she explains.

"To reduce transportation costs and emissions, we are also reviewing our agreements with carriers, and the goal is for environmentally friendly alternatives to become a non-negotiable matter in the future," says Siby.

Paroc, a manufacturer of stone wool insulation in Hällekis and Hässleholm, aims to leave a positive imprint on the environment for future generations. An important part of this is the company's development work in the factories. In Hällekis, work is underway to transition to an electrically powered smelting process, which is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the manufacturing process. Several development projects in the environmental area are also underway in Hässleholm.
