Paroc factory in Poland: electric melting production lines switched to 100% renewable electricity

On the first day of 2022, Owens Corning Paroc took a major step in its sustainability journey as its factory in Poland switched to 100% renewable electricity for its two newest production lines. These production lines, opened in 2008 and 2020, use electric melting furnaces. By powering them with renewable electricity, OC Paroc has been able to decrease the global warming potential (GWP) of products produced on the lines by 78%*.

This milestone is particularly significant because the Polish factory is the largest of Owens Corning’s factories in Europe. As a result, this change has contributed to a 30% decrease in the overall CO2 emissions in Owens Corning’s European stone wool production*.

Supporting the growth of renewable energy in Europe

To make the green transition a reality in Poland, Owens Corning signed a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with Octopus Renewables in late 2021 to source energy from its Ljungbyholm wind farm in southern Sweden.

The two wind VPPAs will provide over 90 MW of renewable electricity capacity annually for the next 10 years, accounting for more than a fourth of Owens Corning’s VPPA annual capacity. This will contribute to the decarbonization of Owens Corning’s European operations and help reach its sustainability targets. OC Paroc, along with Owens Corning, is committed to achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2030. Currently in 2022, 57% of Owens Corning’s electricity comes from renewable sources, meaning there is still progress to be made.

Increasing our use of renewable energy is a critical part of our plan to reduce the embodied carbon of our products. This deal is one more step towards our 100% renewable electricity goal, and this agreement is particularly important for two reasons.

By signing the VPPA, we not only secure the supply of renewable electricity for our factory in Poland, but through additionality we also contribute to the growth of the renewable energy market. At OC, we will continue to look for opportunities to invest in renewables.

Owens Corning will continue to expand renewable energy use, reduce energy intensity, and innovate for more sustainable processes and products while exploring new renewable energy opportunities globally.
