Close to both the city and nature and with a view of Gothenburg, FO Peterson's new prestige building, Brf Träkronan, is built from wood and has fire-resilient and energy-efficient stone wool insulation. The stone wool insulation enables the construction of long-lasting buildings that are comfortable inside and have lower energy consumption.
One of Gothenburg's first apartment buildings built of wood is high up on a hill near the center of the city. Brf Träkronan consists of three contiguous but staggered buildings. It is 7–8 stories high, with nearly 60 2–4-room apartments. Most of the apartments have a balcony or patio, and several have double balconies. The view from the hill is lovely!
Wood and stone wool in combination
FO Peterson, the main contractor, chose to build in wood. According to Tomas Käll, architect for the project, it was the company's CEO, Jonas Steen, who made the choice of material. Both the frame and the load-bearing exterior walls are made of CLT (cross laminated timber). To insulate the wooden structure, PAROC Stonewool insulation and the PAROC ZEROfix self-supporting system were chosen.
"We wanted to design a wooden house, partly for environmental reasons but also to be able to work with wood and to benefit from its aesthetic possibilities," says Tomas Käll. "Stone wool has great advantages because it is a non-combustible insulation material that goes well with wooden houses."
Fire requirements made the choice easy
Anton Svensson, project manager for Brf Träkronan, has spoken about the choice of materials and how the choice of insulation was based on the desire for a fireproof solution. "The fire consultant was very particular about what should be in the façade. One of the requirements was that the chosen material had to have passed an approved SP Fire Test," Svensson says.
The strict fire requirements made the choice of insulation easy. Stone wool is classified as Euroclass A1, the highest fire class, which was also the fire consultant's requirement for the project. The combination of a wooden frame and stone wool insulation is also a proven concept, supported by the project's fire consultant.
